We just purchased a diesel-pusher with 330 CAT with 54,000 miles. I know that CAT/Freightliner has their own oil, but have read where many people doing their own maintenance buy oil from Wal-Mart, etc. There are about 4 quarts of ROTELLA T, 15 W 40 (with the Shell emblem) and four quarts of CASTOR GTX Diesel, 15 W 40, along with a new CAT filter in the coach. I am assuming the previous owner used one of these brands. He is deceased and have no record of the type of oil he used.
Anyone using this type of oil? Thanks for your response.

Rotella T is a good diesel engine oil. Personally, I prefer Chevron Delo 400 15W-40 because of its additive package, but you couldn't go wrong with either. Castrol, on the other hand,......

Check out the CAt Website on oil weight. If you are in an area of the country of cooler temps, CAT actually recommends 10-30 wt oil over the heavier 15-40 oil.

Check here for a discussion on this topic.

Just had my C7 oil changed, and they definitely recommended the 10-30 oil over the 15-40 for our region.

Thanks guys.
On my way to buy the oil, I stopped by a friend's house who has a CAT. He has used ROTELLA T since his was new (9 yrs.) So I made my decision and went to Sam's Club and purchased five gals. Mine holds 22 qts. Fortunately, there was a new CAT filter in the coach when I purchased it. The one I removed was NAPA #1791. It was mfg by WIX for distribution through NAPA. I've always used WIX filters because I thought they were the best. Anyway, if you ever get into a bind for a filter, it's a good number to have.
Thanks again for the info.
Happy Trails,
Larry

Wile looking at the CAT Website, also look at page 2 with your engine serial number to see if your 330 required 22 or 19 quarts. Some of them were changed from 22 to 19 quarts. You may need to recalibrate the dipstick also.

There are both CI-4 and CJ-4 oils on the shelf and the CJ-4 is far superior. It cost just a little more but it well worth the price.
