Hi nodine,

Welllll....My coach is an 07 so the chassis was probably built in 06. My guess would be the '08s and newer. Deffinately the '09s.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific on the '08s.

HPH -- I have a 07 42ft Camelot -- The manuel states the the coach was lubed using Texaco Lithum soap based grease-- No clay -- My questions are: Is all Lithum soap based grease RED, & is it necessary to grease both zerk fitting on the u-joints-- I have air leveling, & getting under the coach to grease it, is a chore, but can change the oil ok (I`m 71 years old) I took it to a RV repair place hre in AZ. for a lube -- Later on, when I went to move it, it seemed a brake was on,but would release with a little engine effort -- I went to Camp Monaco in Harrisburg & that was on the honey do list -- They lubed the coach & found that the s-cam, slack adjusters have never been greased --
I found the lithum soap based grease at Wal-Mart & just finished greasing the coach myself -- The old grease that squeezed out, was not red, hence my question, is all the soap based grease red, or did Monaco use the wrong grease-- Bill Willard

Bill,
The grease I used was red, the grease that Gauranty RV uses is blue according to the service rep. The grease that came out after pumping the new stuff in was gray. The service rep gave me the thumbs up on the red. They're happy as long as it is high quality. However, I'm not a chemist or an expert on greases but the NAPA guy swore on the grease I bought from them.

Okay, I know that's it's been a little while since the last post on this thread. Today I was in the Harrisburg, OR. Monaco Service Center store and lo and behold, there were three tubes of clay-based grease sitting there in a bin. I bought one for seventeen bucks which should last me for quite a long time. I had actually forgotten that I've been looking for this grease and I havn't been close to any company lube stores like Shell or Exxon so I didn't buy any. CheetahGirl and I were there to kill some time and see if there were any Safari Logo shirts to spend some money on. I was walking out the door when something made me turn around. There they were all by their lonesome, just waiting for me to see them. In retrospect, maybe I should have bought them all. Anyway there are two left if any of you are hanging out there with a 2006 or earlier Roadmaster chassis.

So finally, this weekend I will grease my slack adjuster/cams on my air brakes with the correct grease without mixing clay-based with lithium soap-based grease.

I did talk to my service rep in Coburg, OR. and he said that they were using the newer lithium soap-based greases on top of the old clay-based greases with no problems. Hmmmm...we'll wait and see how that goes for people in the future.

Happy travels,

AKBrick

Wowee, thanks AKBrick for the post. I'll try to buy a tube on line for my '06 Monaco Knight. Maybe they still have some clay based remaining.
Again, thanks, now if I could just do something about this short engine burp tube. Doc USAF

William,
Some say grease both fittings on the U joint, some say no if new grease comes out of all 4 bearing caps. I don't grease both. Both zerks channels end up at the middle of the U joint. I just make sure new grease comes out of all 4 bearing caps. Sometimes the joint may be in a bind and a particular bearing may not take grease. Moving the coach a couple of feet usually solves the problem.
I don't think there is a universal standard color for various greases. I think you are ok as long as the grease you purchase has the certification Monaco requires or exceeds it. Some mechanics say Lithium soap based grease with Moly holds up better under the pressures in U joints than standard lithium soap based grease.

McMaster-Carr has a pretty good explanation of the various Lithium greases.

http://www.mcmaster.com/

under find products type in grease and there are several pages explaining the various types of greases.

Before you get under ANY machine, support it with adequate jackstands.

You got that right Dan. Even with the jack stands I set the jacks down to just touching the concrete. I get a more than a little nervous with 30k lbs above me. I also have my mobile phone with me. I know it's overkillbut I'd rather be laughed at than cried about.
