Filled up in Sundance Wy the other day and had a choice of 85.5 octane for $4 or 88 octane with 10% ethonal for a few cents less. I took the 88 and still don't know if that was the right choice at that elevation, although we did drop down some...traveling into the black hills and further south before we filled up again in Colorado.

IMHO the fuel we get this year is far less in BTU's than last year, from a cheaper additive package or just lower grade gas for a higher price. I really do not know which one at this time, but have talked to many people in the trucking buisness that say the MPG on their fleets have declined over the past 5 months. I think as a whole every one has lower MPG in the first half of 2008.

My Itasca doesn't have dash MPG calculations. Thank God. If anyone is relying on that generalized, approximation for accuracy, they are fooling themselves. Not long back ssomeone was bragging about getting 10 MPG but when asked how the calcs were made said the onboard computer. Then he said he used those #s because they were higher than he got when he used pencil/paper calcs,

hamguy, I don't think that anyone is relying on the MPG calculations in the Actia IP to make life and safety decisions as if they were flying an aircraft and needed realtime fuel information.

The Actia IP suggests that if you drive your motorhome in a certain way you will see the averages drop. If you drive more conservatively your averages should show a marked improvement. There is nothing that suggests that the reading is infallable however it is more than what you get on competing brands.

Hi Driver,

I have no idea what Actia says since I don't have one. But I do know that some among us have relied of the numbers from on-board instruments when giving MPG data.

When I see someone claim 9-10MPG in mountains towing a car with a 38-40' 22 or 24K chassis and 5-speed Allison, I get suspicious.

You can't beat good old fashioned (miles driven since last fill) divided by (gallons to fill again)!

Absolutely! Thumbs Up I agree 100%. There isn't anything yet that beats the old fashioned paper and pencil MPG calculation. OK - you can cheat and use a calculator. Big Grin

Actually I cheat and use a MS Spreadsheet to calculate all sorts of goodie but totally worthless info.

Sounds in the ball park to me. Slowing down to 55 nets me just under 7. I know some guys talk about 8 & 9, but I don't think so.
