My lifetime average pulling the Honda for 34,000 miles is 6.84. If I correct for generator hours run while driving it will come up .2 or so.

The lowest mpg per tank was 5.46 and the highest was 8.5.

My average, over the last 20,000 miles, is right at 7 MPG.

Well, there is no way I'm ever going to sell our Allegro Bay37DB, because the 8.1 in it must be something special because we regurally get close to or over 9.0 MPG! Therefore, we'll just continue to make modifications to make it nicer and just keep what we have! Thursday I'm getting a new set of Koni FSD shocks. Regards, Chuck/Bagman57.

2002 Itasca 35U workhorse 8.1l. In 48,000+ miles in 4+ years we have averaged exactly 7.300 MPG. Mostly towing a Nissan Maxima. 58-65 MPH, many mountains.

So far this summer, we are averaging 7.531 MPG after readjustments to Steer-Safe.

I was not looking for a pole on what mileage one got, rather the question is: What might I look at to see WHYI'm getting low mileage. I've seen listings before on what people get.

I believe I have a problem, and would like to know what to go after to improve my mileage.

Looking for your suggestions.

Thanks,

Drive slower. The workhorse loves 58-62MPH! (~2000RPM)

Over 600 miles of very flat country roads - possibly fast & slow every 10 to 15 miles, pulling a new Saturn Vue. 18000 miles on coach. My milage was 6.27. Not towing, but "in town" get 5.4 MPG.

NO lack of power. The state park we go to will challenge ANY vehicle, and I really think if my engine was sick, there is no way I could make it in there. (It is a 15% + grade.)

I've heard many people blame burned spark plug wires. If this was the case, I would think there would be a serious lack of power.

Running 87 octane, brand name fuel. Oil is synthetic with about 3000 miles on it. NO smoke or oil loss at all.

What's your opinion?

BR,
Regarding MPG, I don't think what you're seeing is abnormal. You seem to be describing a healthy running coach. If you feel it is too low or want to improve on it, most of the suggestions in this thread would be applicable to that end.

A single 600 mile trip as you described is far from being an indicator of averages as those taken over many thousands of miles and gallons of fuel used. I'm sure if I pulled out any 600 mile interval from my 50,000 miles of fuel pumping I could reproduce your numbers. overall ave being 7.2.

You said you have a 15% grade to pull. This alone will kill fuel milage along with stop and go city driving. Every time you stop it's like climing a hill to get these rigs moving again. As far as highway driving my 05 36ft.dolphin with 8.1 and alison 5 speed averaged 6.5 to 7.5 MPH driving 70-75 MPH and it gets 8 to 9 MPG driving 62-65 MPH. Keep it under 2300 RPM.

Are you purchasing your fuel at the same service station all the time? I’ve had instances recently where the pump reading on the gallons pumped read more than my SUV holds when filling it up. The error was near 10%. Such a scenario could throw your calculations off enough to indicate lower MPG than you are actually getting.

Any pump that far off should be immediately reported to the state Dept. of Weights & Measures. It will be closed that day or the next and receive a huge fine. At least in most states.
