They did tell me that Rexhall was one that is having this problem so DriVer may have a point. But as I stated, Not all Rexhall have this problem so it could be more model specific rather than then brand specific.

In the WH chassis guide, it is stated min. opening for grille is 587 sq. inches. I am sure a lot of the overheating problems are related to low air flow to the engine. The opening in the grille might be blocked by the cross members (screen) in the grille and the placement of componants by the body builder. By putting in the aftermarket air tubes, I wonder how much water will then be directed to the very hot engine parts that do not need any cooling water.

We have seen various OEM grill configurations and one of which I happened to see most recently was a coach that had a flush finished, 1/4" diameter hexagon mesh type grill. This grill treatment was installed both hi and low on the front fascia of the motorhome.

I am very much of the opinion that the mesh grill plows the air as the motorhomes goes down the road and that a significant amount of cooling air never gets in to the engine compartment.

I have to tell you, what focused my eye on this coach was the fact that the service center had to pull both heads off the engine and get the exhaust manifold studs drilled out. Talk about over heating! I can't blame the coach manufacturer for sure but none the less it bothers me to obstruct the grill openings with cosmetic mesh.

At idle when the MH isn't moving or when the coach is going slow it's probably not a problem. I see it as a problem when going at highway speeds. I do like an open grill configuration better than having the openings completely covered with mesh.

Some of our members have chosen to place 1/4" square chicken wire behind the horizontal bars in the grill opening on the Adventurer. I don't think that wire installed in this manner will significantly impact air flow since the air has already begun to accelerate through the horizontal bars in the grill. The purpose here is to keep the condenser & radiator clear of large debris and bugs.

WCC service has told us not to put any bug screens or stuff like that on our grill openings and as you can see the reason for this suggestion is obvious.

Don't do anything that will significantly compromise the airflow to your cooling system.

Before knowing of the overheating problems the some owners are having. I replaced the lower screens (fasica) on my MH with 1 1/2" opening expanded alum. screen. After working in the minimg indust. for over 40 years, I could see that the small openings in the screen were blodking the much needed air flow. After the replacement, we traveled the West in 100deg+ weather. Over the hills to lost wages and never had a over temp. problem.

Fulltimer mentioned that the Rexhall Rexair had less problems then the Aerbus. My Rexair has had plenty of plug wires replaced. But since putting in the Nascar type plugs no problems for 6,000 miles. My Workhorse Service center says that all kinds of RVs and trucks have this problem and the plug wire take care of it. Even the Large Kodiak trucks with the same engine have the same problem and the have lots of air flow compared to the MoHos. Who really knows what the real problem is?

The Workhorse Service Center finished installing all of the parts this last Tuesday. This has been a process that has taken from the 1st of October to now to complete. The worst was being out of the MH for two weeks(tough when you are full timing) who wants to keep two people and their dog???

The work that was done included...new cat converter, brake recall, new plug wires, new metal sleves for plug wires, ABS wheel sensor, replaced AC compressor and installed the air vent kit from Workhorse.

I will be making a trip on Saturday of about 150 miles so I will get to see if it all works.

I have also tried a couple extra things to help the spark plug wire problem. If they work I'll share the information.

Driver, by the way my spark plug wire problem didn't start until about 13000 miles. My MH has the expanded metal grille should I look into changing it to something more open?

I'm not exactly sure what that is, do you have a picture? The Winnie has horizontal bars with nothing else in the airstream aside from mechanical gear behind the grill work.

DriVer,
Do you have any problem with bugs getting into your AC condensor or radiator with no mesh in your gril. I would like to remove my expanded metal gril (diamond shaped gril) from my Aerbus but am concerned about the bugs.

I have no mesh or screen on 2003 Dolphin. Not had any problems with bugs and debris so far. 22k miles. Lots of bugs on front of cap tho.

Hi Full Timer, Thanks for the question and about that I can tell you this. The bugs have absolutely no problem hitting the condenser. They go splat with the greatest of ease. Big Grin
