If one has a coolant sensor with two wires, it does not need to be changed. I one has a coolant sensor with 3 wires, it must be rewired to work only with two wires. This is per Spartan on a call earlier this month.

I am going from green to Final Charge in 1Q, 2008. For me there is value to making this change. Not having to check SCA is something I can take off my list of things to remember to do. In addition, Final Charge need not be replaced for 6 years (adding the Extender at 3 years). Six years will be about the time coolant hoses need replacing. It can be done at the same time.

For me this is kind of like going from flooded batteries to AGM (maintenance free) batteries. It is more work and more expensive up front. The value comes from being able to basically forget about maintenance tasks that come way too often (for me) with the old technology.

re: the "flush", do you mean to use a system flush type of chemical or just stick a hose in the top of the expansion tank? If it is the first, what is the proper procedure to get the flush chemical completely out of the system as I have been told they use a caustic soda mixture.

Also, one would want to drain the system when cool correct? How do I get the block drained, assuming I can't find any block drains and with the thermostats (I think I have two), when the system is cool, they are closed so how does this older coolant get around the stats, as well as the new stuff until the engine heats up...or am I over thinking this?

quickduk,
Spartan (in Charlotte) does this as a service.
1. Turn dash heater on full.
2. Gravity drain coolant out the radiator.
3. Fill with water.
4. Run the engine and continuing to fill with water until the system is full.
5. Run engine about ten minutes.
6. Turn off the engine.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 5 until all that comes out is water (or almost all is water).
8. Add proper Final Charge coolant/water mixture until full.
9. Run engine adding proper Final Charge coolant/water mixture until full.
10. Test drive for 30 minutes at highway speeds.
11. Add proper Final Charge coolant/water mixture as necessary to ensure system is full.

This is the process I will follow. I will also carry an extra gallon with me for a few months to make sure I have Final Charge coolant, with me, incase the system needs a bit more.

Your Onan genset is also compatible with OAT coolants. I found Fleetguard's Optimax easier find in my area than Final Charge and they're 100% compatible. I switched my Onan 10KW over to Optimax so that I only need one coolant for both the engine and genset.

The beauty of OAT coolants is that the organic acids do not etch aluminum and you'll get better life out of any aluminum components in the cooling system, whether it be radiator cores, water pumps, or engine manifolds. Also, the checking of SCA levels is done away with. No more test strips! Smile The coolant is good for 6 years in an RV application but you do have to add some Extender at 3 years.

HELP RE COOLANT!!
I've read and re-read, and re-read postings re: coolants and am now I'm thoroughly confused and lost. We run an 06 Mtn. Aire, 400 ISL Cummins pusher. Tag on coolant reservoir says fill only w. Rotella ELC but prior to Alaska trip this last summer had Cummins in Sioux Falls do maint. INCLUDING coolant level which they apparently topped off with Fleetgard Ethylene Glycol Concentrate/Optimax (at least that's what container says) with nothing about 50/50 mix. Tech gave me 4/5ths gallon of this Fleetgard coolant to use if needing to "top off" during trip, and I DID add the balance of that partially used gallon BEFORE I noticed there was nothing about 50/50. Still didn't bring reservoir up to glass bulb level and I need to add more....I guess. However, after reading all your discussions about "OAT", "SCA", "converting", "filters used or not", etc. etc. etc. WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?????? What do I purchase to top off coolant? Is there some conversion stuff I need to add? Can I buy Rotella ELC and just add it, or can I buy Fleetgard Concentrate and just add THAT?? (or does it need dilution???). Can anyone straighten me out on this. Thank you. Steve & Lynette

Chickadee,
From what I've read, you are okay with the Fleetgard Ethylene Glycol Concentrate/Optimax coolant added by Cummins in Sioux Falls.

To answer the question about what to add in the future, consider following the recommendation on your coach label. Add only Rotella ELC. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation as to time and mileage maintenance.

The most important thing to remember is to provide the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and de-mineralized water (distilled water) followed up by a check of the cooling system at six month intervals. At this time if the cooling system requires the addition of coolant, always add a 50/50 mixture. Never add just water to top off or just coolant to top off. This will either dilute the chemistry that protects your engine or create an excess concentration of antifreeze (which does not transfer heat very well).

Gary, THANKS:
So, find Rotella ELC (somewhere...) and then use it to top off making sure it's a 50/50 mix with distilled water. Thanks again. Steve

The Fleetguard Optimax coolant is the exact same as the Shell Rotella ELC. You can buy the Optimax pre-mixed and save your self the trouble of adding proper water. You need to reduce the concentrate to 50/50. Get some distilled water and dilute your concentrate i.e. dilute the amount you have all ready added by the same amount of distilled water . That should take care of your present shortfall and buy pre-mixed for standby.

I don't see ES Compleat mentioned in this thread. I installed ES Compleat 1 year ago. It is a glycol base and blue in color.

My question is this. The test strips show I'm in the green range at around 2.1 to 2.5. The parts manager sold me a 4 unit DCA filter, but the back of the test strip chart says to use "ES" liquid.

Do I use "ES" liquid or the DCA 4 unit filter I just bought?

Do I even need to add anything, if the coolant tests in the green?

Are the red coolants better than the "ES"?

Thanks. I am confused Aeh!!!

I assume your engine is Cummins since you are on this section but it would be helpful to know the engine type and year e.g. ISL400 2006.

However, the ES Compleat is okay and can be recharged with liquid or the charged filter. The red coolant is "better" in that one does not have to concern ones self with testing and adding DCA and it has a longer life.

The proper range of is 1.5-3.0 UPG so it looks like you need to do nothing although I'm not familiar with the test strip you used.
