I'm just a few thousand miles into my first diesel coach experience. I have a 2008 Allegro Bus with the Cummins 425hp ISL. When checking the oil it has a very black color to it. This is very diffent than my experience with gassers. I still have many thousands of miles to go before my first recommended oil service and I was wondering if the oil should look so black after just a few thousand miles?

Hello SlickTX:
Welcome to world of Diesel Pushers. Yes in diesel engines oil will turn black, so do not worry. Dave Fernandez 2001, 38ft FDDS 350 ISC, Tow 2004 GMC Yukon http://www.alpinesocal.com/ http://www.alpinecoachassociation.com/ |

Yep, it's soot suspended in the oil by the detergent/dispersent additives. The more "heavily fueled" the engine is, the sooner the oil will turn black.
