I cannot answer your question directly.
I have a 53 block also. Cummins claims that only about 1% of the engines have the cracking problem near the exhaust problem. Since I discovered that the problems exists, inspection of that area is one of the things that I do every time I'm under there. Cummins claims that they "can" provide help if an engine develops the cracking problem. If you want to be really nervous, research KDP (killer dowel pin). Cummins claims that the problem was isolated to the pickup truck version of the 5.9. I guess I have the choice to believe them or go find the information to perform the corrective action. I'd taking the cracking any day to the KDP. Charlie 2000 Georgie Boy Landau 36' DP |

The In laws had a # 53 5.9 block that started to leak coolant after 60-k and 7 years.
Cummins provided a new block and split the labor with them. That left them with about a $5,000 bill. Is that fair for an out of warranty engine with a known defect? I can argue both sides 2005 DSDP 3810 370 ISL Spartan MM Chassis |

As for Dodge pickups the model years with the 53 block is 98.5 to 2001. Here is a link for repair of a cracked 53 block:
