We are looking to upgrade from our Fleetwood pop-up to a travel trailer. We are unsure as to buy new or used, any thoughts? the price differences are great.

If you are sure you know what you want you may want to buy new. If not, then a good used one may be a good option. If it turns out to be not what you want then there is a better chance to get most or maybe all your money back.

A clean used unit will save you from the horrible depreciation of the first week of ownership. Lots of nice used trailers out there. As in everything, buyer beware.

Do your homework.

Pros for new: Warranty, get what you want, new trailer smell (could also be a con), latest features.

Pros for used: lower price, most bugs probably out of it, prevous owner may have made some modifications to make it even better. Can buy from owner - avoiding the stealer dealer.

Cons for new: higher price/huge depreciation (depends on model-higher end units don't loose as much as lower end ones),inital out gassing can cause health issues, have to work with a dealer (I hate salesmen and the dealing game)

Cons for used: hidden damage - you could be getting some one elses problem child that had had band-aids applied. Might take longer to find what you are looking for.

I bought my first TT used - just to see if my wife liked camping as much as I did - that was back in 1983 - we are now on our 4th TT. I may be different, but I usually spend lots of time researching and looking before buying, then when I buy it I intend to keep it for a long time - kept my second TT for 12yrs, the third for 6 and hope to keep the 4th for at least 10. I don't worry about much about depreciation - I am enjoying camping too much for that.

new / used...We too had a 99' pop-up and were planning on buying another pop-up when we came across this Aerolite Cub hybrids. I think the fist thing either buying new or used is the trailer layout the one you can be 100% happy with. It has to meet your needs: Floor plan, sleeping arrangments for your family, aisle space, counter space, inside storage space cabinets, outside storage, bathroom elbow room, fresh water cap, options. To me besides the layout, overall "fit-and-finish" of the trailer. Meaning how is the trailer put together. Are the joints butted up nice and neat, are moldings cut and nailed just right, do the cabinet doors open with ease, inside the cabinets or storage spaces are things neat, are there areas where caulk was used just to hide large voids. When we looked at the Aerolite's they were more $$$ but the fit and finish was there. It will be hard to find a used trailer in exactly the right layout and options. But then again you will save $$$. I wanted the peace of mind of having a warranty because we use ours 50+ nights a year. Some people have 2nd homes, well us RV'ers have a condo on wheels where we can go anywhere we wish......
