Hi Raceman and welcome to IRV2.com.
I've added a shortcut to your inquiry in the Caterpillar engine section to help get you an answer. Gary Brinck 2004 American Tradition 2007 GMC Acadia Homebase in the Ocala Nat'l Forest near Ocala, FL |

The biggest issue with boosting horsepower on a DP is that you are adding extra fuel and modifying timing and other parameters. This adds heat to the process. I'd be very careful about monitoring exhaust gas temperatures at the turbo. Generally these mods will increase EGT considerably and you can burn up turbos if you don't keep a sharp eye on them and back off the throttle on long grades. Also, while horsepower goes up, the torque generally remains the same.

I don't know, I think my 350 HP C-7 runs just fine as is. No real need to monkey with it.

We have had excellent results with the module. Dyno results on a C7 show top gains of 95 HP and 285 in torque. When we install the module with the Aerotubine muffler and AFE performance filter it is true Cummins eater.

Keith, You have worked on my 2006 Journey before and I have been very happy with all your work. I'm just wondering if this modification is as critical to exahust temperatures at the turbo as mentioned above. I just don't want to forget to watch another gauge for exahust temperature and end up frying the motor.

Steve,
Thanks for the kind words. You are on the right track, increased performance on a diesel can mean increases in exhaust gas temps under heavy loads, that is why we always install the AFE Performance Filter and Aeroturbine Muffler along with a Pyromter and Boost gauge kit when we do a module. The AFE and Aerotubine alone will drop your EGTs by over 100 degrees under load. In response your question specifically, should you watch a pyrometer when pulling a hill, yes you should, especially if your coach is so equiped. Do you need to keep one eye on it all the time? No, use it when you pull the hill. After a few hills you will find the sweet spot where the engine and trans are working most effeciently and most likely you will see your temps reside in a safe zone. With all the performance packages we have done on the C7 excessive EGTs has never been an issue. Usually we get a phone call from your buddy you passed on the hill, with him wanting to know what we did to your coach. If it adds horsepower & torque, how does it affect fuel mileage?

After the mods our customers tell us they almost always get additonal fuel economy. At the shop and rally's we sell the performance packages as a safety device, allowing the driver to pass on hills.
