Curious if anyone has used more conventional shades in lieu of the RV day/night shades. We're doing some interior upgrades and some of our shades need replacing. However, we never use the 'day' shade since our windows are so heavily tinted and we have window awnings...only pull the shades at night.
Bottom line, are there better alternatives (RV-specific or otherwise)? '02 Journey DL, 36GD, 330 CAT. '08 Explorer Toad, Blue Ox Aventa II, Air Force One Toad Brake. Smith Mountain Lake, VA |

I recently installed new mini-blinds from Home Depot in our coach. Home Depot cuts the width for you and you shorten them to fit the window height when you install them. With a little patients they install pretty easily too. They come with plastic brackets that allow you to anchor them at the bottom which prevents them from banging around. I considered the day/night shades but liked the mini-blinds better and they are a lot cheaper.
While at the Depot I also picked up a roll of aluminum faced bubble wrap to make insulating panels for the windows. This helps stabilize the inside temperature and keeps all the sunlight out when not in use. Good luck! Warren 1999 National Sea View 8331 1998 Jeep Wrangler 2006 HD FLHRCI |

Smlranger,
We just replaced 8 day/night shades in our motorhome with metal 1" mini blinds from Lowe's Home Improvement store. We measured each window for width and length and special ordered them and it took about a week to deliver them. They were very easy to install as I just screwed the top frame into the window box header. As I remember it was about $225.00. Warren, if you have dual pane windows you will want to be very careful with the foil backed insulation on the inside of the windows. This will reflect the heat and it builds up inside the air space of the window thereby cooking the the seals and causing a vapor leak in between the panes.

Check out MCD RV Innovations. They have a new style shade that appears to be really well built. Some of the manufacturers are starting to install them in their new coach models. I saw them at the FMCA convention in St. Paul last week.
They can be purchased in manual or electric versions and supposedly have a new R-factor built into their design that slows down heat/cold transfer. Don't know if they have a web site, but their email is: info@mcd-rv.com, and their phone is: 800-804-1757 Bob 2004 Fleetwood 36B Pace Arrow/Workhorse W22 UltraPower Performance ECM w/Cold Air Intake, '04 Colorado Pickup FMCA F291896 US Navy - Carrier Battlegroup '59/'63 Amateur Radio - WA0MQE |

RV Wizard thanks for the tip. I wasn’t aware of the problem that can arise when using insulated panels in conjunction with dual pane windows, but it makes sense. I will add that to my mental database. Our coach has single pane windows so there shouldn’t be a problem. I guess I need to be more careful about the information I share.

Just went to a session with MCD here at Winnebago GNR. Their website is www.mcd-rv.com. After I looked their new shades over in their booth, I called the DW and asked her to come join me in their seminar. She is a hard sell, and we have not had as many complaints about the standard day/night shades as many people seem to have, but she soon agreed with me this would be a super upgrade to our day/night shades. We plan to get some for the windows, and are seriously considering having the windshield area done too. This message has been edited. Ditto for my endorsement of the MCD shades. They started using them on the Allegro Bus in the 2008 model year and are excellent quality and the company stands behind their product.
