In playing with my new toy a digital temp reader, my tires are running from 116 to 140 degree. How hot do tires have to get before they blow?

One caution about the Tire Temp article referenced above: it says that pressure varies about 1 psi per 10 degrees of temperature change, but that number is for passenger car tires. The actual rule of thumb is that pressure varies about 2% per 10 degrees, which means on a typical RV tire tire with 80-100 psi, the change will be 1.6-2.0 psi rather than 1 psi.

One thing I haven't seen here yet is the note to not only verify each tire's temperature, but also look for major variations from tire to tire. If 3 of the tires on the rear axle are running at 125 degrees, for instance, and the fourth tire is running at 160 degrees, then chances are good that there's something going on with that 4th tire - it may be underinflated, or overloaded, or have a tread separation in progress...

I too have been playing with a digital IR temp gauge and have seen pressures in the same range as what you are showing. On my 2008 36QSH I am also showing a higher right rear temp than left. Which is on par with the high right rear weights that we have heard about.
It was 90s temp and 65 mph when I saw the 140 temps. Other times and cooler days I see more like 120f. |
