At a RV seminar a few weeks ago I heard that only 40% of the folks buying a motorhome ever test drive the motorhome they end up purchasing.

If anyone has had a dealing with the "Major Buyers of Late Model Used MHs" (Lazy Daze, La Mesa etc) you will know their folks do a VERY through checkout of any unit they are considering. This can take hours and is done by checklist. If you could get one of their checklists it would probably be GREAT for a standard PDI.

I don't know how many others do this but the See Ya DP group on Yahoo has a PDI check sheet written by current owners for prospective buyers. I downloaded it and used it for my PDI, the dealer didn't like the idea but I insisted if I was going to pay for it I wanted it right. It took the dealer all day to go over the check sheet with me, about 9 hours, found out that their usual PDI takes about an hour.

In the dealership that I work for the PDI stands for the dealer's inspection of the unit when it arrives from the manufacturer. When the customer has finished all the negotiations with the salesperson, has hopefully taken it for a ride, and has inspected the vehicle. The vehicle is then put into detailng and prep which takes care of unpacking the vehicle, cleaning and correcting or adding options to the vehicle that the customer requests. Then I enter the picture on the day of pick up. Prior to the customer arriving I inspect the vehicle and make sure that there is water in the tanks, electrical power is to the vehicle, and the interior is either heated or cooled.
Upon the customer's arrival I proceed to walk the customer around the outside, opening the awning, storage compartments, sanitary compartments, generator, power compartments , propane tanks and all external attachments and fittings. The customer is also trained in the proper procedure for leveling, winterizing, care and maintenace of the outside surfaces , awnings, tire pressures, lug tightening etc.
Upon completion of the exterior walk-around the interior walk thru begins, slides are opened , all sysytems are operated and explained, all safety precautions are highlighted. Sleeper sofas are opened, toilet treatments are explained and tank dumping procedures are again covered.
As you can see, a comprehensive demonstaration of ALL systems is given and the customer even has the option of video taping or recording the inspection.
If there are defects discovered, they are attempted to be corrected immediately, or they are noted on a defect sheet which is maintained and either the part is ordered or it is taken care of on the next visit to the dealer.
After I complete this procedure the customer is then turned over to a finance peorson who closes the deal and the customer takes possession. I also aid and assist the customer in hooking up his tow vehicle to the unit be it TT or 5ver and they are on their way.
I personally feel as an RVer that the customer is given all the information required to operate and use the RV in a safe and enjoyable manner.
