I feel your pain. My factory warranty went out in May and this happened in June. Luckily, when I bought my motorhome, they threw in an extended warranty. It cost me a $50.00 deductible. I had already replaced the plugs and changed the fuel filters though. I just bought the shroud kit and installed it myself to fix the air filter problem. The kit was $13.00 and it installed in about 30 minutes.

Afton: I'm glad that aftermarket warranty is paying off for you. At our point of sale, the finance lady encouraged us to buy the warranty by saying, "You have to buy it now, we can't sell it to you after you go home." So we bit. We thought that we understood that it was a bumper to bumper warranty. When we learned (the hard way) that it wasn't bumper to bumper, we immediately cancelled it. All I can say now is that selling aftermarket warranties is a money making racket for the dealership. We had the 7-year warranty only 9 months, and lost half of the premium when we cancelled it. The explaination was that the 7-years began when the chassis was first titled (put into service), not when the Miklas' bought the same unit used. Even after cancelling the STAR warranty and paying for the ingestion repair out of pocket, I was still over $1200 ahead of the racket.

George, I usually never buy extended warranties myself unless it is on electronics that include battery replacement. However, this one was included with my purchase as a "close-out" special. I am sure that I paid for it somewhere in the paperwork. The extended warranty that I have is DFS Advantage, Platinum Motor Home Plus. When the mechanic submitted the repairs, the only question they had, was about using aftermarket parts instead of original "Ford" parts. When the mechanic told them he only installs original equipment replacement parts, they just paid the bill. Billy Sims Trailer Town, the dealer that sold me this unit, told me that they have used this company many times without any problems getting the repairs done.

Bill,
When you got the part from Ford, did you get only part or were there two things that came with it? I had the dealer order the part or parts and he says one part came in and he is checking on the other part. I didnt ask him what part he had or what part is "missing". I just wonder if he thinks there is something else coming in that really isnt needed.

When I bought my air inlet tube from Ford, I only received one part. Click this link to see the photos of the tube on this web site inlet tube The tube installs on the bottom of the air filter cannister. I removed the plastic guard that surrounded the bottom of the cannister where the factory air inlet is located and discarded the plastic guard. I then removed my cannister from the bracket by pulling in forward so the rubber grommets holding it in the bracket released. Then I pulled the bottom of the cannister out of the bracket and removed the factory rubber inlet tube which is short. I then set the cannister back into the bracket and inserted the tube into place. You can attach the new tube to the bottom of the cannister and then slightly lift it up until the hose clamp is just above the foam spacer at the bottom of the cannister and tighten the clamp. Or you can just install the cannister back into the bracket and then install the tube and get under the motorhome and tighten the clamp. It took about thirty minutes to install. Be careful with the top of the air filter cannister because it has the mass air flow sensor inside. I removed mine to get it out of the way but be sure whatever you do, not to damage the wires coming out of the top portion of the cannister or the mass air flow sensor itself, it cost about $150.00 to replace and is very sensitive. Also, you will have to provide a rubber strap to hold the air inlet tube up against the air filter cannister as seen in the photos.

ISLAPP, The part number I ordered was XC3Z-9F843-AA and I did receive the inlet tube only. I do now understand the TSB 04-24-22 for this fix does have two part numbers, one is the tube the other is a rubber strap. At order I did not know about the strap. I used a rubber bungee cord as you can see in the photo I posted.

The F-53 chassis is the Ford brand chassis used in some class "A" motorhomes. The other main chassis is the workhorse, which has a Chevrolet engine. The Ford F-53 usually has a V-10 0r 460 engine. There is no such thing as a stupid question.

I also just used a "tie down" strap to secure my tube when I installed it.

Thanks Bill.
My Ford dealer has been waiting for the part or parts to come in. Maybe today. Would have liked to have had it on before my trip. Will see.

Anyone that doesnt want to buy or cant find the Ford part can use a 6"dryer hose mounted the same way bring out from the bottom of the air intake housing and turn it 90 degrees upward running it and securing it against the radiator support as the pic shows. When I called the ford tech when I had the same problem this is what his solution was.Good to see they decided to address the problem and try to fix it.Also in addition to the hose I was told to install some weather stripping in the crack of the hood under the windshield where it opens,Ford says water could be seeping in that crack and getting in the intake hose. Hope this works and other Ford owners hear about this, understand thsis is a major flaw with the V-10 other than that my 2001 gas V-10 will run circles around the workhorse mileage and pulling plus 8.9mpg at 70mgh in my 36ft Dutch Star.

Good luck guys
