I finally found an air compressor which will bring my tires up to just over 120#. Got it at Home Despot, made by Ridgid for 250 bucks. For those who are interested, it's a twin tank, 5 gal, 150# max developing 1.8 HP. About 9+ scfm at 90#. I've tried several others and have worn out the return desk after none of them would bring the tres up to even 110-115#. Fits nicely on the left side, rear tray while trying to even up the left/right weight distribution.

Another option is Viair 400P-A 12V compressor and Extremeaire 12V compressors. They are smaller, with the power to inflate any RV tire.

Ray, those look pretty interesting. I have been told to stay away from the 12v ones, since they consume so many amps. Do you use one of these? And will they pressure up a 295/80 RV tire to 120#? I guess my concern would be how long it takes to raise the pressure, given that they put out about 1 cfm. Mine, with 9 cfm takes long enough....my back starts to hurt while holding onto that chuck and waiting to inflate.
But I sure like the small size of these. Bob and Carol 2007 Travel Supreme Alante 45MS14, K-2 Chassis 2006 LX470 Toad |

My Select has three air fittings mounted to the chassis. Since the air brakes compressor puts out about 125 PSI I would like to find the proper male fitting to fit the air chucks.
I then could get one of those yellow coiled air hoses. Does anyone know the part number or brand of the air chuck? There is nothing on the chuck. Essex comes standard with this setup, but will not matchup with mine. 2003 Travel Supreme 45 Select |

Jim, I tried using the onboard compressor to raise my front tires to about 115-118 lbs., but while the pressure seems to be there, the compressor doesn't put out enough cfm to do the job. This was verified by a Spartan guy at the factory, so I changed gears in my thinking.
But you can try yours since it's a cheap investment to do so. Go to Lowes or HD to their tool/air comp. area. There are only two different male hose fittings, one of which should mate with the existing female on your rig. Buy one of each and try them to see which fits. One has a concentric ridge round it, while the other has a groove at the same location....can't remember which one fits, but one will. The other option is to unscrew the female off the air line on your rig and swap it out for a different fitting which will match the male fitting on your hose. When screwing a new fitting onto an old, I always use a teflon tape to be sure no air leakage occurrs. Also, you can get an air chuck with a spring-loaded clamp on it which will clamp onto your valve stem, relieving you of the need to squat down and hold it against your valve for about 20 minutes. And it likely will take that long or more....that is why I gave up on the idea of using the onboard comp. Bob and Carol 2007 Travel Supreme Alante 45MS14, K-2 Chassis 2006 LX470 Toad |

Something else I just remembered. I tried to move my coach and the air pressure wouldn't come up....couldn't even release the air brake since I needed about 50 lbs. I believe, to release the brake. I had Coach Care scheduled to come out and do whatever repairs I needed....new compressor or ?? I wondered what had happened and then one night while trying to get to sleep it dawned on me!!!
So now I don't use that yellow coiled stuff and have gone to a poly air hose which is more durable. Bob and Carol 2007 Travel Supreme Alante 45MS14, K-2 Chassis 2006 LX470 Toad |

Which compressor did you get? I can't find one on Rigid's website that has 9scfm at 90#
I did find this one, do you think it would do the job? http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/OIL-FREE-AIR-COMPRESSOR/EN/index.htm |

Yes, that's the one. I messed up with the output....should have read 4.9 scfm. I guess my memory didn't serve me well....sorry. Home Depot carries it.
But it does work well for me. I had to cut out a 2 in. section from each side of the vertical tubing and welded the two ends together. This lowered the handle and crossbar enough to pass under the frame rail in the basement. I put it in the rear cargo tray on the left side to improve the load balance a bit. With a 50 ft. hose, I should be able to get to all tires and the toad. Bob and Carol 2007 Travel Supreme Alante 45MS14, K-2 Chassis 2006 LX470 Toad |

WOW! Never thought I'd need that compressor this soon. This AM, as I got ready to break camp, I checked my tires and found my inside duals to have 38 and 68 lbs. in them. One tag had a leaking Schrader valve, but the cap was holding the air. A couple more tires were a tad low, so I was able to bring them all up to proper pressures right there on the spot and not have to drive 25 miles to the Flying J at Lazy (Crazy) Days. Talk about a convenience.
Now all I need is that Pressure Pro the "Boss" says I don't need.... Bob and Carol 2007 Travel Supreme Alante 45MS14, K-2 Chassis 2006 LX470 Toad |

Bob,
I am getting my coach back this week and still being new at this I have a couple of questions. First of all if I don't have an on board air compresdsor, where do I fill my tires. I assume that any truck stop would have a compressor that could do the job but do RV parks and places like Camping World usually have public accessable outlets? Also, I have read a lot of posts about tire pressures and the best advice seems to be that I need to weigh all 4 wheels individually to accurately fill my tires. So my question becomes how do I do this? I see at the FMCA rally they have this service available but I sure won't have my coach loaded for full timing yet so I am not sure how valuable the information would be at this time. And I am concerned about how I get the coach to the weighing area from where I will be parked. This is my first gathering and have no idea how all of the logistics work. Also many of the posts mention the Michelin pressure chart. I assume that info is availabe at their web site, correct? In the end I believe that the best indication of tire pressure correctness is tire temperature and am still looking into the systems that measure tire pressure AND temp. Looks like a good system! I wonder how accurate it is?
What is the proper tire pressure for a 38 footer with single real axle?? |

Yes, you can fill your tires at any truck stop. I don't like to do this because it means you have to hurry so you don't delay the truckers behind you. Also, there is usually poor conditions, like oil/water around the coach and you end up a little messy. Finally, I hate to just pull into the truck stop even if not needing fuel and hogging the lines while making truckers wait. Sometimes the air compressor isn't working, so you wasted your time going there in the first place. And when you do need air, is there a place nearby?
As for pressures, I am not 100% sure on your particular coach. I and a friend of mine with a 42 ft. TS coach run 105-110 in the fronts, and 90 # in the rear duals while lowering the tag axle tire pressures about 5-8 #. When I had my 39 ft. Fleetwood, I seem to remember running about 110 in the fronts and the same in the rears. Maybe others will chime in with their recs. But yes, the best is to weigh the coach at all four corners. You'll see the Cat scales at a lot of truckstops or at the rallies you can sometimes get it done. If you can't get weighed right away, just use the pressures I've give you and you won't bee too far off for the time being. The tire pressure monitos are another matter. I'm still researching what to do about the various systems. I stopped at a truck tire place in Tampa today and they changed out a defective valve stem on the inner dual. Did a great job and I'd recommend them to others. The tire store is named Olin Mott....stop by and see them if anyone needs tire work in that area.
