We're going to be traveling through Texas, from El Paso to San Antonio in February of next year. I'm looking for suggestions for stopping points and RV Parks to stay at along the way. We don't need to stay exactly on I-10, we can deviate off the interstate as long as it doesn't require too much criss-crossing or back-tracking. I wouldn't even mind that if diesel prices weren't so high, but since they are, we have to think about those things now.

One place we stayed in May was in the town of Bracketville, TX. It is called Fort Clark Springs RV Park. This is located in an old Fort that has been restored and developed into quite a facility. There is a springs fed pool (huge), a couple of golf courses, Gen. Patton's home and lots of wildlife. We drove on Highway 90 rather than I-10. It allowed us to visit Big Bend National Park.

We found this to be a nice park and a place you could easily stay for a night or a few days if you so choose.

Balmorhea State Park is a good place to stop. It's just a little ways off I-10 near the town of Balmorhea. The state park is built around a 22 to 28 million gallon a day spring with a 77,000 sq. ft. swimming pool, a lake, and a desert wetlands with several species of endangered fish. The pull-through sites have 50 amp, but we thought the back-in sites had better privacy, even though they only have 30 amp.

Another nearby state park is Davis Mountains State Park. It is about 40 miles from the interstate, but it is the remote feel of the park that we liked. The surrounding mountains are beautiful and the town has an old fort you can tour. If you want to be out late at night, you can go to nearby Marfa to look for the mystery lights.

Coming from the West there are many parks, Van Horn has several, as does Ft. Stockton, Ozona, Junction, Kerrville and then San Antonio. The only caution light is once you leave Van Horn you want have anything close to I-10 until you reach Balmorhea and there just off the interstate is a park good for over night.

Seeing that that leg of your trip will be in Feb. having a spring to swim in won't be important. West Texas can be quite cold that time of year, I-10 was closed in places due to snow and ice. If your time frame allows it, take US90, lots more interesting some small towns, some mountains, nothing bad though. 2 lane highway but typicaly good Texas highway. Marfa lights as stated, Ft. Davis and don't pass up Langtry and the Judge Roy Bean Museum. Several RV Parks in Del Rio as well as the others mentioned. You can do it in 1 hard days drive or take a week or 2.

I'd second the recommendation of this route rather than taking I-10.

The RV park in Marathon is nice...nothing fancy, but the spaces are wide and the people are friendly. $12.50 if you belong to Passport America.

Don't want to forget the Caverns at Sonora, TX, just a few miles east of Ozona, where there are also a couple of parking spot parks (one in town at a hotel and one east a few miles). We did stay at the caverns, where there are about 25 sites, for the purpose of overnighting this last January. Very dark and I would suggest getting there early enough so as to stake out a fairly good spot on the gravel. Be careful as the spots are fairly close and one can scrape their coach bodies on the railroad tie pedestal guards (as we did). Also be aware that there is only one way into the area; only one sign warning that you are approaching the entrance on the right. We blew past it and had an exciting time unhitching and turning around (trucks zooming along the two lane road) but we survived it. We did not visit the caverns (too much walking) but enjoyed the dark night...bring your scope. There is also a timed deer feeder to entertain you, which dispenses deer food for the local deer population.
