My wife and I are looking at a 1996 Gulf Stream Scenic Cruiser with the Spartan chassis, 230hp Cummins, and 6-spd Allison. It has 97K miles on it. It looks to be in decent condition, and I've always heard that higher mileage on a diesel isn't as important as on a gas engine.

Any advice or opinions? Pricing is right in line with NADA. I'm just looking for reassurance on the mileage and the durability of the drive train.

Thanks!

Mark & Joyce, welcome to iRV2.com. We are glad to have you join us here and look forward to reading of youar adventures and experiences. The most important aspect it that the proper maintenance has been routinely done on schedule. Ask to see the maintenance records.
Also realize the 230 hp is not a lot of power so be sure to drive it and estimate how it will be when you have it fully loaded and/or have a toad behind it. Offer a price below the NADA guide if you decide you want it. Good luck and keep us posted.

Gulfstream Scenic Cruiser is a very good coach. I have a 2002 with the Neway freightliner chasis with the Cat 3126-E 330hp engine and it has been an excellent coach. Cabinets are the real walnut wood, with corian tops and ceramic floors. I bought it brand new and have 37K miles on it now. They stopped manufacturing the Scenic Cruiser a few years ago and brought the TourMaster to replace it. Gulfstream has a habit of doing that, then they bring them back after new modifications. I guess right now if I was to buy another Gulfstream it probably would be the 45'Constellation. It seems like another nice Gulfstream coach.

We have the Cummins 230 in our HR Endeaver. In hills, we are not overpowered, but still way better than the Ford V8 in our Class C we had before. After reading what mpg other people are getting, it seems that the more hp you have, the more fuel you will use. We can usually expect around 10 mpg when towing our Suzuki. We also carry lots and lots of stuff! Good luck, HarveyP
