Hello All,
I learned this the other day. I have the RV Discount Fuel Card from Flying J, it's gets me a discount on fuel, and the amount of the discount depends on how much fuel I purchase, signing up is free and can be done on the website. www.flyingj.com I got bugged with them because they wanted to charge me an extra amount for fuel when using my Costco Credit Card. So I called them on it, and the shift supervisor said! "If you use your FJ discount card, and then pay for the fuel with a CC the extra charge is waived". Plus with the Costco card, I receive 5% cash back on fuel up to 75 gallons a month, so I save a little more, provided you have the Business CC, which I do. The regular card get you 3% on 75 gallons, other discounts also apply, restaurants, etc, read all about it at Costco.com I always fuel at the truck area, because it's easier to get around in that part of the complex. They will do all the adjustments inside at the fuel desk, since you (RV) are not allowed the truck discount, and if you are fueling at the truck island, you have to go in and pay anyway. I have used FJ's fuel discount card/RV Card for 5 years. It also gives you discount on propane. I understand discount computation has recently changed. Past computation was based on fuel purchased within 30 days...Current computation based only on how much you spend in store or feed trough within 30 days. Baseline now is $30 minimum inside to get fuel discounts going outside. |

Hi Monty,
The J RV value card when inserted first at the truck island pump allows you to pay for the fuel with the CC of your choice. You get the cash price without spending any $s in the store (currently about a 9 cents per gallon savings). If you spend $s in the store, your discount can grow. This means you go into the store only to retrieve your receipt from the carousel, sign and your on your way. No waiting in line and only one trip to the cashier (the professional driver entrance). FYI, my AMEX card also provides 5% cash back on fuel. There is no limit to how much fuel I buy or the total discount I receive in any time period. This is the personal AMEX card not the Business AMEX card. Sorry, but that it no longer the case. The amount of discount you get on fuel NOW depends on how much you buy inside each month, either at their restaurants or in merchandise purchases. You can see the discount schedule here. The per-gallon fuel discount is a joke. In order to get a 3-cent per gallon discount, you must spend $10 per month inside. With gasoline purchases, there is a 100 gallon per month limit. 100 gallons x 3 cents per gallon = $3.00. So, to get $3.00 off on 100 gallons, you have to spend $10 inside...where's the advantage in that? You do slightly better if you're purchasing diesel, which has a 300 gallon per month limit. 300 gallons x 3 cents = $9. The only real advantage in using Flying J's RV Real Value card anymore is to get the cash price when using a credit card (you must swipe your Flying J RV Real Value card first, then your credit card). I generally check fuel prices with Diesel Boss before my trips. Flying J is the most consistent in have the lowest price in the area that I am purchasing. The cash price with a CC and others discounts just make them more attractive. We don't get that at the other brands. We normally use the RV island as they are usually very clean, have water, sewer dump and propane if we need to take advantage of those services. Many times when we have had to fuel at other brands and use the truck lines, we felt that the haz-mat people were probably on the way and we should at least discard our shoes before re-entering the coach.

It's good to check fuel prices before filling up, and not make the assumption that Flying J *always* has the lowest fuel prices. We recently traveled through Ellensburg, WA and I'd checked fuel prices before getting there. The Union 76 station has diesel that was a good 20 cents per gallon cheaper than either the Flying J or the other truck stop in town (Pilot?). We stopped and fueled at the Union 76. Linda, You are correct, some Flying J's are more than nearby stations. Usually they are franchised J's which are indicated on their webiste as such. This is the case with the Ellensburg, WA.

Careful what ya bite into doing that, I stopped buying gas from 76 a couple years back because of consistently poor fuel quality. I was losing MPG on their fuel, so I had to stop buying it. Hi Joseph, are you still filling up with a "full tank" of fuel?. Since weight means everything, just wondering if you were topping off your tank/s when filling up, or just half a tank full to hold down on dead weight. I stopped carrying as much dead weight (including fuel/water/propane/tools/can goods) as possible, which actually gave me a few extra miles. I even sold my heavy SUV toad and downsized to a smaller PT cruiser. Anyway just wondering? Doc
