Anyone from Alabama here? We are moving to AL next month from Ohio (grew up in Florida so at least it's south). I'm worried about the taxes on the motorhome. I've had friends recommend registering it in a different state. I could easily set up a FL residency, but really don't want to skirt the law. My husband will be employed in AL and we will probably buy a home. My husband says just bite the bullet. It will all even out. Any suggestions?

With friends like that, you don't need any enemies! Big Grin

Which is exactly what you would be doing if you were living and working in Alabama and tried to set up residency in any other state. If caught, it would cost you much more than whatever taxes you may have to pay on your motorhome.

We bought a new house 1 year ago in northwest corner of Alabama for my retirement in 6 years.I would do everything by the book and list it in Alabama. Property taxes in Alabama are so low you won't believe it. I live in northern Indiana now in a 14 year old home and the Alabama taxes are 1/4 of the Indiana property taxs. Home prices are also much less then here in Indiana. I think it will be a great state to retire in. I forgot gas is 20 to 25 cents cheaper per gallon. Good Luck, you are going to like it.

RAYBE,
Our friends in Al. have mentioned that their annual motorhome cost for lic. plate renewal runs $900 on up depending on the rig's value. In Fl our annual tag renewal costs less then $80. Food for thought huh?

Property taxes are relatively "cheap" but motorhomes are in the ad valorem tax category..my tag last year was about $2100!! Not exactly in the cheap category

Thanks again for the replies and welcome. We will be moving to SE AL. Not sure where exactly. Planning on staying in the MH (probably at Gulf Breeze) until we find an area we like. Hubby will be working in Mobile. We looked around the Foley area last Oct. but want to look up around Spanish Fort.
I would appreciate input from people in the area.

Are you referencing Gulf Breeze RV Park in Gulf Shores, AL, or are you thinking of someplace in Gulf Breeze, FL? At any rate, you may wish to take a look at Anchor's Aweigh RV in Foley, AL. In my opinion, it is a much nicer park than the ones down in Gulf Shores and is closer to Mobile.
