for those who do, how do you change the oil in your motorhome? Specifically, how big a oil pan do you need, etc.

I have changed mine a few times it is a piece of cake. I have an ISL engine that holds 27 Quarts.
I found 2 plastic oil pans, with spouts. They are similar to the ones Walmart sells, but these hold more and have no tops.
Without the tops it is easy to tell how full the catch pans are getting. When the first one gets 3/4 full, I slide the second under. I can do this without getting any oil on the ground.
I then use a strap wrench, from NAPA, to break loose the oil filter.
I fill the new filter up,lube the gasket with fresh oil and install it.

namesiw..funny you should ask..I just changed the three oil filters(2 by-pass)and (1 engine) on my KSDP yesterday. I use a test kit before deciding to change the oil(synthetic). I use an oil pan that I found on line that holds 30 qts. Its molded plastic and very lite weight. I put on grungy jeans and crawl under the rig (block the tires!). It can be messy so be careful and take your time.Hope this helps.

I use a Fumoto drain plug and drain the oil directly into gallon milk jugs or 2 1/2 gallon cat litter jugs, then a regular oil pan to catch the drips from the filter.

My 400 ISL holds 28 quarts with filter. I have two 5 gallon buckets that I use to hold the 7 gallons of oil that'll be coming out. I also use the Fumoto Oil Drain Valve. It lets me shut off the oil flow mid-stream so that I can put 3.5 gallons in each bucket without making a mess. I then dump the dirty filter in one bucket and the old primary fuel filter in the other. I then put lids on them to transport them with out spilling. It works great!

I don't change my own oil anymore because of where we live, but when I did, I used a 48qt coleman cooler with a drain valve.

This cooler fit perfectly under the oil pan and was easily transported to my local Walmart where I drained the oil into the recycler.

The cooler was large enough that it also caught drips from the changing of the oil filter.

As you might guess, it no longer was used for icing down food or drink, but it was great at catching and hauling the oil away.

If you decide on this route, make sure that you measure under your coach before you buy and that you make sure the handles will support the weight of 7.5 gallons of oil. I figured that if the handles could support a chest full of ice and soda, it ought to support 30 quarts of oil.

Had not thought about an ice chest -- great idea and easy to drain the oil afterwards.

That is a good idea! Just be sure that your favorite beverage isn't in there when the oil comes down.

I use this Blitz 58 Qt. pan. It's big enough not to slop when moved, has wheels on one end and with the built in pour spout I can pour the used oil back into the one gallon containers the new oil comes in.
