Can the ferry to Galveston accommodate a 40 ft motorhome? As many times as I have been to Galveston I have never taken the ferry from the north. We are planning a trip to Galveston and really don't want to fight Houston traffic so thinking about taking the ferry and missing Houston. I will be towing a vehicle and good sense dictates I disconnect before boarding the ferry if we can take the ferry.

The Bolivar ferry is part of TX-87. I see trucks on it when I use it, and a Google search didn't find any size limitations specific to the Bolivar (Galveston) ferry. You should be fine.

Thanks Rusty. I could not find any limitations when I did a search either. I've taken our MH on the Port A ferry but did not have any experience with the Bolivar ferry. I've been to port Bolivar but never paid attention to the ferry. It was always day trips from Beaumont.
thanks again Dawn and Mark 06 HR Endeavor 40 PET 05 Taco Pusher Molly and Cassie - the little buddies |

Thanks guys. I finally found a site that says each ferry can handle 8 18 wheelers so I'd bet it can handle a 40 mh with toad.

I went across it with a 26 ft Grady White hooked to "Lil Red". That same crossing had a DP with a Toad, so I don't think you will have any problem.
The drive along the coast on to the East of the ferry landing is a nice scenic drive too. We haven't taken the DP with tow on the ferry but did take our 5th wheel a few yrs ago. Lanes are very narrow, we almost lost a mirror on the truck when the mirror of another truck caught ours. Also if you go across on Fri-Sun or a holiday weekend, expect long delays, sometimes up to 3 hrs.

Thanks for the tip on the narrow lanes and the long weekend waits. Sounds like it might be wise to pull in the mirrors.

We went across and they put me in center lane and i had plenty of room. Then here came an old guy like me in the inside lane, and his right hand mirror was hitting the side of our motorhome. I was watching in the mirror and his wife was screaming at him, but never moved over. By the time i got out i was steaming as this was first trip in new mh. We had a little talk and had to make him give me ins info, got home and the black marks buffed out. The worst part they were rvers and stiil had mirrors extended otherwise it would not have happened.
